Blacktop Farming+ is an initiative that seeks to leverage innovative temporary, modular farming techniques and technologies to facilitate the reclamation of large, unused paved lots along the Hudson River for use in community supported Urban Farming.

Blacktop Farming+ (Blacktop) is an initiative that seeks to leverage innovative, temporary, modular farming techniques and technologies to facilitate the reclamation of large, unused paved lots along the Hudson River for use in community supported Urban Farming (not gardening) on a massive scale. Using co-operative food growing operations (gro-ops), Blacktop will be able to offer farming solutions on large scale lots of varying shapes and compositions. Each gro-op will consist of a network of modules, each of which will be built on rescued and repurposed wooden pallets, for ease of removal or relocation. Each module will consist of a raised-bed garden constructed from locally reclaimed materials from the theatre industry, New York City scaffolding, and reclaimed planks from the Brooklyn Bridge. The surrounding community will play a vital role in the development and maintenance of the gro-op, and will benefit directly through social capital building, a bolstered economy, affordable produce, and education opportunities.

Don’t forget you can also get materials from BUILD IT GREEN, in case you don’t already know of them.
